Matters & Deals
One workspace per deal. Contracts, meetings, people, files, chat sessions, and playbook runs all in one place.
A Matter is a deal-shaped workspace. It groups everything related to one deal — contracts you’re drafting or reviewing, meetings with the counterparty, people involved, uploaded files, chat sessions, playbook runs — into a single timeline-shaped view.
Creating a matter
From the sidebar, click the + next to Matters / Deals and type a name. The matter appears in the sidebar under that section. Click it to open the Matter Overview page.
Under the hood, a Matter is a workspace — the same model as the contract spaces and meeting spaces you may have used before. We just renamed the surface to match how legal and operations teams talk about deals.
Matter Overview
The overview page shows everything happening in this matter:
- Metrics — document count, meeting count, open risk count from playbook runs
- Timeline — every contract, meeting, AI edit, and playbook run in chronological order
- Documents — contracts and uploaded files associated with this matter
- Open risks — high/critical findings from playbook runs that haven’t been resolved
- Key people — people associated via meetings or contracts
- Companies — companies involved
- Recent assistant activity — chat sessions in this matter
- Next actions — suggested follow-ups inferred from your playbook findings and assistant suggestions
How items get associated with a matter
Items are tied to a matter when they’re created with that matter as their workspace. When the matter is the active workspace in the sidebar, anything you create — new contract, recorded meeting, uploaded file, chat session — lands in that matter. You can switch the active matter from the sidebar at any time.
Matters vs Business Workspaces
Matters and Business Workspaces are different concepts:
- Business Workspace — your company’s identity. Contains business profile, default jurisdiction, payment terms, risk posture, standard clauses. You usually have one per legal entity.
- Matter / Deal — one deal or matter you’re working on. You’ll have many matters within a single Business Workspace.
Switching the Business Workspace changes the “you” side of every contract you draft. Switching the Matter changes which deal you’re currently focused on.
Tips
- Create a matter at the start of a deal — before drafting the first contract or recording the first meeting. Everything will land in the right place from the beginning.
- Rename matters as the deal evolves. The Matter ID stays the same internally; only the display name changes.
- Use the timeline to brief a colleague on a deal’s history without sending them ten Slack threads.
